August 1996
  A cabinet committee on the Promotion of Savings was formed. It started the Savings Promotion Programme. This committee centralises and coordinates nation-wide efforts in this programme.
December 1996
  Our then Prime Minister, Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad, launched the nation-wide Savings Promotion Programme. This campaign was aimed at three main target groups - students, workers and women.
March 1997
  Launched the campaign for school children. The aim was to inculcate the savings habit among students and encourage them to save for future education.
April 1997
  Introduced the "Program Sekolah Angkat" (PSA) or the School Adoption Programme. This programme aims to promote closer ties between financial institutions and students. It also aims to instil effective financial planning habit among students. Under this programme, government-aided primary and secondary schools are adopted by at least one financial institution.
December 1998
  The Savings Secretariat at Bank Negara Malaysia produced and launched the first edition of "Buku Wang Saku". The "Buku Wang Saku" concept aims to assist students in monitoring their spending habits. It is also meant to educate students to save and record balances from their pocket money everyday
November 1999
  To ensure the success of PSA, "Kelab Kewangan Pelajar Sekolah" (KKPS) or Students Financial Club was launched at Sekolah Menengah Sains, Selangor. The event was officiated by Y.B. Dato' Sri Mohd Najib Bin Tun Hj. Abdul Razak, who was the Minister of Education then.
